About Girlvanise

Our Mission

Strengthening girls to stay in sport and to build a better body image.

‘Women in Sport’ conducted research and discovered that only 14% of girls aged 5-16 achieved the recommended levels of physical activity. Worryingly, this drops to 10% in girls from 13-16 years. The same survey found that only 28% of girls aged 14-16 actually enjoy participating in a physical activity. 7 out of 10 girls would rather stop eating to change the way they appear (regarding their weight / body image) rather than exercise.

Therefore, there is clearly still a problem. By age 14, many girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys. The BBC recently reported that 55% of girls aged 12-16 (other than enforced sport in schools) don’t play sports anymore.

Our Aims

We are launching an initiative that not only introduces girls to a range of sports that they will engage in into adulthood. We aim to give girls the skills to enjoy longevity in sport. Sport is a lifestyle and it’s more than just playing a game. We want to shows that sport can build healthy bodies and good relationships with other girls. Teams that play together stay together. Furthermore, through building a holistic approach to sport we hope that girls will stay in sport longer.

The Girlvanise plan is comprised of 4 parts:

  • Choose a sport to sample

  • Learn how to strengthen your body to avoid injuries and build performance power

  • Increase your flexibility to increase movement range

  • Nutrition - eat to fuel performance and improve health.

Together, with more joined-up thinking, girls can enjoy longevity in sport and a healthier lifestyle.
